With almost 20 years of communications experience within policing, across most functions within a Corporate Communications department, I would like to support an innovative, hardworking committee that invests in police communication teams across the country.
I was formally appointed as Surrey’s Head of Comms in June 2019, and I’ve had the privilege of working at every level in Surrey’s comms team. I am definitely a product of “grow your own”.
We all know that feeling of stretch. Whether it is the impact of long-term sickness, ongoing recruitment challenges, or simply enabling people new to policing to effectively spot risk and be released to fly with their skills and talents – all while trying to help your team achieve everything on their own workload.
I believe that my experience can support APComm members to operate as efficiently and effectively as possible, and to help them in retaining team members who, quite rightly, are passionate about development and want to see their careers flourish.
APComm has really developed its training programme over the past few years and I believe that in seeking to retain our best and brightest we need to continue to professionalise our sector. I would seek to develop a network of coaches across a range of skillsets – from enhancing our communications skills through to effective task prioritisation, or influencing senior stakeholders. I would relish the chance to contribute to APComm’s growing culture of learning.
I am also a firm believer in building strong relationships in order to do things more efficiently and effectively – at all levels, within departments, neighbouring forces, regionally and nationally. Over recent years Surrey and Sussex have collaborated across officer and staff functions as well as on tech solutions. Sitting both on Surrey’s Executive Board and on our Joint Executive Board I’ve had the opportunity to see how relationships are the key to unlocking challenging areas of business – which ultimately benefits the public.
Like many of us I balance a busy job with a crazy home life. I’m mum to Tom (16) and Maddie (12) – developing my career to this point has been made easier by a supportive force and incredible managers. I’d like to share this with the wider APComm network.
